For our physics of sports video project, my group decided to focus on the sport of volleyball. Specifically, we focused on the overhand serve. In my group there was Casey Elmhirst, Lara Glendening, and Taylor Rich. To film we used our iPhones and to put the videos together, we used Windows Movie Maker. Theplaces that we filmed are the blacktop basketball courts, tennis courts (we didn't use any videos from there) , outside Mr. William's classroom and from the gym during Lara's games Below, you will see our video, calculations, and my reflection and thoughts about the project.
Calculations
- Force on the volleyball- Force is basically how hard something hits something or how hard something is pushing something. We found the force by using the equation mass x velocity = force x time. For our force, we got 505 Newtons or 114 pounds. To solve, we found that the volleyball player's hand was touching the ball for 1/120 of a second, we weighed the ball and it was .27 kilograms, we found that the velocity of which the ball was hit was 15.65 m/s. Then, we plugged these numbers in and solved for the force
- Vertical Velocity- Vertical velocity is the velocity in which the object, in our case the volleyball, is moving vertically. We found the velocity by using the equation velocity = change in distance divided by change in time. The vertical velocity of a good volleyball serve is 2.94 m/s.
- Horizontal Velocity- Horizontal velocity is the velocity in which the volleyball is moving horizontally. We found the velocity by using the same equation as we did for the vertical velocity. The horizontal velocity of a serve is 15.65 m/s.
Reflection
My project went very well, in the end. It was bit of a rocky road to get it finished, but in the end, the result was good. It wasn't anyone in our groups fault in particular. We just were unable to find a good starting point and go from there. This was probably because we were unable to develop a good storyboard. It took us a few days to establish our script. But, after that we worked pretty well. We filmed everything we needed and put it together in an efficient manner.
My job for this project was as a video taper. I taped some of the serves. Also, I recited one part in our video. My line was a long one about the force of the volleyball. Also, I chose the music to go with our video.
All together, our group worked together pretty well. We had a few minor disagreements. One of them was about which sport we were going to do. I wanted to do a football or baseball related activity, and Lara wanted to do volleyball. We talked it over and realized that the volleyball would be better and easier. Problem solved.
One challenge that we faced was with the Windows Movie Maker system. It would glitch out and delete our audio and then we'd have to re-record it. That was very annoying. Also, sometimes when we were recording the audio, it would start recording before we told it to for no reason. Since we didn't know how to cut parts of the audio we would have to restart and record it again.
Overall, our project turned out well. We had a few problems but we worked through them together and had a good result. Our video ended up well-organized and good. We had good clips in it and hopefully it will help someone become a better volleyball player.
